(NEW YORK – May 16, 2011) – Dominican York Proyecto GRAFICA, a printmaking collective of artists of Dominican descent who live and work in and around New York City, announces that its group show “Manifestaciones: Expressions of Dominicanidad in Nueva York,” will be on exhibition at the University of California’s Washington DC Center Gallery (UCDC) May 19 through July 29. The opening reception on May 19 starts with an artist panel at 6:30 p.m. moderated by Ranald Woodaman of the Smithsonian Latino Center, followed by a reception from 7:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. The Gallery is located at 1608 Rhode Island Avenue, NW, Washington, DC 20036.

In addition to UCDC, the exhibition sponsors are the Embassy of the Dominican Republic Cultural Program in Washington and the Inter-University Program for Latino Research (IUPLR). His Excellency Dr. Roberto B. Saladin, Ambassador of the Dominican Republic to the United States, will speak at the opening reception for the exhibition on May 19.

The opening events and exhibition are open to the public at no charge. To register for the opening, please visit http://manifestaciones-dc.eventbrite.com or call 347.739.7664.

“Manifestaciones,” is a portfolio of 12 prints -- one by each of the member artists--published in a limited edition of 25. Using a variety of printmaking techniques, the pieces explore the individual artists’ perspective on the theme of Dominicanidad (Dominican identity). The prints had their premier exhibition at the CUNY Dominican Studies Center, followed by SUNY Empire State College, and will travel to the Dominican Republic in June for a show at Museo de Arte Moderno in the capital city of Santo Domingo.

Three internationally renowned art historians and scholars have provided curatorial essays for the exhibit: E. Carmen Ramos and Graciela Kartofel, both independent art curators and art historians specializing in Latin American and Latino art, and Betty Wilde-Biasiny, associate professor of visual art at Empire State College, State University of New York.

E. Carmen Ramos states: “Unlike Chicanos and Nuyoricans of the 1960s and 1970s—many of whom were born or raised in the United States and strongly identified with the social movements of this tumultuous period in American (U.S.) history—Dominicans started arriving in the United States in large numbers in the early 1960s, and continued thereafter in a steady stream. Given their “late” arrival, it would take some time before the Dominican-American community would come to be known as such.”

Graciela Kartofel states: “Manifestaciones marks a pivotal moment. It is one of the few group exhibitions by Dominican York artists, and marks the convergence of several trends that were simmering and maturing among artists who had, until now, made a name for themselves only as individuals. An enriching collaboration among the Dominican York Proyecto GRAFICA artists has produced 12 considerable artworks, each one offering a specific approach to the selected theme: New York City as seen and lived by the artists.”

Betty Wilde-Biasiny states: “The impetus for forming the collective was to rewrite, or actually insert, the missing page in art history in which the artists connect to both the tradition of Latin American printmaking and, in New York City, the tradition of printmaking workshops that have embraced cultural diversity and a multiplicity of expression.”
